| Description | A Johnnie Walker square whisky bottle containing a model of the four-masted barque 'Olivebank' 1892 with a lighthouse on a shoreline in the background. The sea is made of plaster as are the two islands, the model is made of wood with sewing thread rigging but no sails. 'JOHN WALKER & SONS KILMARNOCK' on the Cork. ‘Olivebank’ was a steel, four-masted barque, of 4400 tons built in 1892 by Mackie and Thompson, Glasgow for Andrew Weir & Co. She was sold to E. Monsen & Co. of Tvedestrand, Norway. After several Norwegian owners and being renamed ‘Caledonia’ she was bought by Gustaf Erikson in 1924 and reverted to her original name. She made two voyages in the guano trade in the late 1920s, and she transported Australian wheat in the 1930s. On 8 September 1939 she was sunk off Jutland by a German mine with the loss of her Captain and thirteen crew. |
